There's a spark in you.

“Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon...”

The music that flowed energetically out of the speaker at the corner of the coffee shop, faded
away while I was lethargically immersed in a deep pool of unending problems where the
deck of solutions was at an infinite distance.

"I think that's why I wrote it, is because I really believe in people, and I believe that people
have a spark to be a firework. – Katy Perry reveals inspiration behind ‘Firework’".
It was back in 2010, when I was exhaustingly sipping my last bit of black coffee after an
emotionally gloomy day, I heard this line of words uttered by a radio show host after playing
the perfect pop record of Katy Perry. I was about the leave the coffee shop wearing the same
sulky face I had when I entered it. Instantly, something forced me to reflect back seriously on
the familiar lyrics of the famous song, and amusingly, it created a sparkling effect in my
mood.
‘Firework’ a single by the American singer Katy Perry from her album ‘Teenage Dream’
belonging to the genre of dance-pop was released in 2010.The song which is catchy and
highly melodic with its inspirational lyrics was able to reach number 1 on the Billboard Hot
100 and the top five on 20 charts around the world, making it commercially successful.
Wikipedia reports that the song has sold over 1 million copies in the United Kingdom and
was certified 12x platinum by the RIAA of USA for shipments of over 12 million copies in
United States. In the 54th Grammy Awards, ‘Firework’ was nominated for the Record of the
Year and Best Solo Performance. Interestingly, the empowering song was elected the fifth
most played single on US radio during 2011 by Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems.

“ Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from cavin' in?”

‘Firework’ is considered by reviewers as a self-esteem anthem. The song from the start itself,
without going hither and thither, focuses blade-sharp on delivering its inspirational message
to the listener. Katy directs some emotional questions to the listener which are relatable to
almost many of the listeners. It is no doubt that, any person in the world even once may have
felt themselves as useless plastic bags or thin papers. In times where the clock ticks
anticlockwise in our calendars of fortune and hopes, we sometimes fall eye-deep in murky
waters. The song gently reminds each and every weary listener, that they are all valued, and
anyone can have their bright-ups as well as dark-downs in their lives.

“ After a hurricane comes a rainbow
Maybe a reason why all the doors are closed
So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road
Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow.”

Katy Perry sings “After a hurricane comes a rainbow”. The metaphor explains that, after
facing a downpour of hardships and obstacles, the rainbow of success and happiness will rise
above in our individual skies. For us, as we are struggling hard day and night to earn golden
coins to satisfy our needs, there maybe many situations where certain doors may remain close
to us. We might fail continuously in exams, the near and dear ones to us may leave us
unexpectedly, or we might not get a satisfactory salary to purchase the things we dream of
having. The song rings a reminder in the hearts of the listener, by emphasizing that, they have
the capability and energy to accomplish what they desire, no matter how unreachable their
dreams might look.

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go, "Oh, oh, oh"
You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe.

The song pronounces that the listener is a firework, and he should not hesitate to explode
with the energy inside him. Similar to a firework, sparkling brightly, the song invites the
listener to show off his talents to the world as a strong human. Whatever endeavor we embark
on, the spectators around us will invariably not cheer us along our way. Always there are
even one or two people who will lay out hurdles and thorny bushes in our roads. No matter
what others decide to say about our paths, the song encourages the listener to cling to their
dreams. Eventually, the listeners maybe able to leave all of them in awe with their
unbelievable achievements.

Perry has co-written the song with Ester Dean and its producers Stargate and Sandy Vee.
Aside from Katy’s goal to inspire others she mentions that her ex-boyfriend Russel Brand has
helped her find inspiration to write the lyrics in the first place. "My boyfriend showed me a
paragraph out of Jack Kerouac's book ‘On the Road’ , about people that are buzzing and
fizzing and full of life and never say a commonplace thing... people can shoot across the sky
like a firework and make people go, 'Ahhh.' I guess that making people go 'ahhh' is kind of
like my motto". All in all, it is palpable that the song itself has lit in the international music
audience as a firework, attracting lots of listeners.

When running through the lyrics again and again, the listeners feel that the song talks about
some inspirational messages. It is perfectly normal to feel not good at certain times. We are
all worthy and beautiful, even though we may not feel so at certain times. We all have the
courage to shine and achieve our targets irrespective of how far our goals are. On a final note,
it can be said that, the self-believing, foot-tapping and chart-topping song is able to make
every listener feel good.
